Condensation inside double glazing. . why?

Postby jubjub » Fri Feb 05, 2010 11:09 am

'Double glazing condensation' - Nothing to do with computers I know but hey! This is the general bit so I didn't think anyone would mind. Plus it's really bugging me :x so I need some advice please. In the summer of course when it's warmer it's not a problem, however, during the colder times of the year my double glazed window at the back of the house gets covered in condensation on the inside? Whay is this happening? I think maybe the seals have perished or something . . .. anybody know for sure what is causing it? Thanks. :)

Is the condensation on your double glazing just on the very inside of the double glazing or is the moisture trapped between the double glazing panes as well? The reason I ask is that if there's no visible moisture/condensation inbetween the double glazing layers you can probably rule out perished seals because if these were at fault you'd more than likely see moisture/condensation inside the double glazing panes even if you had no moisture/condensation on the inside where you can wipe it off.

Ah thanks Zim. I hadn't thought about that to be honest. No there is no condensation or visible moisture inside the double glazed window itself. It's only ever on the very inside where I can wipe it off . . .. any ideas why this is though, it doesn't happen on any of my other windows in the house which are all the same type. . .

hi jubjub,

when we had this problem (in the upstairs spare bedroom) my husband discovered that it was just because we never had the heating on in that room and the door was always closed so there was no airflow or something and this caused there to be more than normal moisture in the air which condensed onto the window. we kept the window (double glazing) open just a tiny crack for a while then I think we just turned the radiator on in there and eventually the condensation went away. hope that helps you

Could be that I suppose - what kind of ventilation do you have in that room? Is it a room that you use a lot or never go into much?

It is a bedroom that we are in and out of every day . . . I don't think there is excessive moisture in the air, but then, the condensation must be coming from somewhere :/ The paint on the windowsill has started to peel a little because of the moisture dripping down and is damp to the touch, do you think the moisture could be coming in from there rather than the double glazed window iteslf or from the air in the room?

Been doing a bit of googling, think I might try bleeding the radiator in there as I've meant to get round to doing that for a while. It doesn't pump out as much heat as the others when the heating is on so, accordingly to my googlage the moisture in the room might be higher than the other rooms like feepod stoke says. I'll let you know how it goes :) thanks for the help.

Hi jubjub, did you ever get this condensation on your double glazed window issue sorted out. I only ask because I've got the same problem. . . it must be a conspiracy, lol.

Hi mega - turns out that because it's a north facing window and we weren't cranking the radiator up, and that the airflow isn't great in that particualr room that this is what caused the condensation problem with our window. We bled the radiator to make sure it was pumping out enough heat and we try to keep the door to the room and the curtains open as much as possible. We had a couple of warmish days recently also and that seemed to help the issue no end. Thanks for all the help by the way people.
